Dear Brussels CUSD #42 Families,
I am incredibly grateful to the Brussels CUSD #42 Board of Education for selecting me as your next Superintendent and Elementary Principal. I look forward to getting to know the Brussels community, our students, our families and the team of professionals who work tirelessly to create a robust learning environment that supports each student.
I grew up in Murphysboro, married my high school sweetheart Dan and we raised our two children in Southern Illinois. Dan is retired from the Dept. of Corrections and is excited about the fishing and hunting opportunities in Calhoun County. Our son, Doug, and his wife, Brandi, live in Brownsburg, Indiana with our three grandchildren (Derrek – 18, Kaitlyn – 14, Lora – 10). Doug is a medical defense attorney and equity partner for Stoll, Keenon, Ogden in Indianapolis. Our daughter, Nikki, and her husband, Morgan, live in Girard, Illinois with our two granddaughters (Isabella – 9 and Alayna – 6). Nikki is a Family & Consumer Science Teacher with Springfield High School. We have a three year old miniature Australian Shepard, Fozzie, who runs our home.
This is my 29th year in education. I spent the first part of my career as a Family & Consumer Science teacher. To this day, teaching remains my greatest passion. Over the last 10 years, I have had the amazing opportunity to serve teachers as an adjunct professor with SIUC. In 2005 I moved into administration as an elementary principal for the next 12 years. I have also served as a principal consultant for ISBE and Asst. Regional Superintendent for ROE 30. Most recently, I was Gifted Coordinator for Springfield District 186. I graduated with my doctorate in 2022 from Western Illinois University in Educational Leadership.
My vision of K-12 education has changed over the course of my career. Today it is grounded in a belief that all students should be provided a foundation to pursue their personal passions, develop healthy relationships and contribute positively to society. That foundation is created through a learning environment that has a well-articulated curriculum; engaging instruction and access to opportunities for exploration including career and technical education, extra-curricular activities and community engagement.
I am excited to have this opportunity to lead the Brussels School District, and I look forward to forging a truly collaborative effort with the Board, staff, families, students and the community to build upon our many successes and identify new opportunities for our students.
Sincerely,
Dr. Nancy Bitner
Superintendent of Schools

As school ended and summer began, the boys basketball team went straight into summer ball. To start, the boys basketball JV team traveled to West Central and won 2 of the 3 games played. The JV team then went to the Greenville shootout and finished undefeated there. As the JV team wrapped up their time at the Greenville shootout, they, along with the Varsity team, travelled to Quincy. The JV again went undefeated in Quincy while the varsity team finished 3-2. From there, the varsity team headed to Wisconsin where they not only won 5 of their 6 games, but also got to enjoy the water parks and other attractions. After a successful season so far, the JV boys went to Illinois College to compete and finished 5-0. This concluded the JV season giving them a 20-1 record for the summer. In the meantime, the varsity team still had a couple shootouts to attend. The first was in Branson where they went 4-4 with some nail biting games against some larger schools. To finish the season, the varsity team headed to Greenville where they went 4-1 losing to a big school in the semi-finals. As their season ended, the varsity team’s summer record landed at 17-8. Though there were some pretty tough losses, both teams had a phenomenal summer season, amping up the anticipation for the winter season. If you haven’t made it to a game in a while, this is the season to do it!

Welcome to our new superintendent, Dr. Nancy Bitner.
Together We Rise

Thanks, Doc!
I am privileged to post this to celebrate the end of an era in Brussels. We would like celebrate the achievements of a remarkable career. The career of a man who has been a cornerstone of our educational community for the past 14 years, our superintendent, Dr. Mark Martin.
As you may know, Dr. Martin will be retiring after 49 years in public education spanning 4 districts in 2 states. Think about that for a moment…49 years…..49 first days of school, 49 school picture days, 49 years worth of parent/teacher conferences. 49…..we….you can understand….49 years is a long time!
Dr. Martin has been more than a leader; he has been a mentor, a visionary, and a guiding light for all of us. His tenure has been marked by unwavering commitment, unparalleled passion, and a profound understanding of the true essence of education.
Dr. Martin has always worked to build relationships in the community. He has fostered partnerships with local businesses, community organizations, and families, understanding that a supportive community is the bedrock of a successful educational system.
As we reflect on his time here with us, it is clear that Dr. Martin's impact extends far beyond the classroom. His mentorship has shaped the careers of countless educators, inspiring them to strive for excellence and to approach their work with compassion and creativity. His legacy is not just in the programs he has implemented or the policies he has enacted, but in the lives he has touched and the hearts he has inspired.
Dr. Martin, on behalf of the entire school district and the Brussels community, we extend our deepest gratitude. Your leadership, vision, and dedication have left an indelible mark on our schools and our community. As you embark on this new chapter, we wish you all the best. May your retirement be filled with joy and the knowledge that you have made a lasting difference in the lives of so many.
Thanks for the ride, Doc!
