5th and 6th have been studying Hitler, Nazi's and the concentration camps of WW11. We have been tracking both my Grandfather's units as they were both in The Battle of the Bulge. 4TH ID (Patton's 3rd Army) and 605th Tanker Batallion. This statue was found by Richard Prough in a demolished house in Holland as his unit made their way across the Netherlands and Northern Germany. Next week, I am bringing a Purple Heart awarded to Clifford Alexander. We are on ch 5 of Number the Stars and have just started discussing Anne Frank and how she and her sister both died in the Bergen-Belsen prison work camp from Typhoid. The kids are shocked and appalled, as am I, but I love teaching Geography and History and learning along with my students. ALOT of doom and gloom but even the bad parts of History need taught to younger generations to raise awareness and keep it from happening again. On a brighter note Happy Easter.

We can't wait for our first annual Science Fair and Science Night on April 27th. Students participating in the Science Fair can set up at 6:00 in the cafeteria and judging will start at 6:30. The Science Night portion will be set up in the high school as an open house format from 6-8 pm. Everyone is welcome to come to the Science Night, even if you are not a Brussels student. We have several groups coming out that evening with educational activities, so come out and do science with us!

We had a beautiful day for an egg hunt on Tuesday afternoon! Thank you to the BHS Civics Club members for helping out and providing eggs for the students. Also a big thanks to the students for donating canned goods for St. Vincent DePaul. Happy Spring everyone!!

Aubrey was our in house experiment expert today with challenging our taste buds and our noses with a blindfolded food experiment. After Science we celebrated finishing our state assessment testing this week with Shrek 2 and some snacks.

Don't forget! The Civics Club will be sponsoring an egg hunt for BGS and SMS students (PreK-6) on Tuesday, April 4th in the Brussels Town Park. Please have your kiddos bring a canned food item in their baskets to donate to St. Vincent DePaul. Happy Spring!!

On Tuesday, grades K-6 enjoy a pizza and ice cream party they earned by reaching their reading goal of 500 books. Each class participated by reading books and keeping track using a visual display. Working with Mrs. Michele they set goals and reached each goal set. The students have decided to continue to keep track until the end of the year. Total books read so far 576!

Our Brussels National Honor Society members helped out with our annual canned food drive, along with our local Girl Scouts. This is an annual project that we do each spring. Our Girl Scouts and NHS members take different routes and place bags and then one week later pick up any canned food or dry food items people would like to donate. This year’s donations went to the SVDP food center. The group collected over 2800 food items and helped restock a depleted center.
Great job to all who helped place the donation bags and those who helped sort and collect the items.
Way to go BHS NHS and the Girls Scouts!

Today 1st & 2nd grade took a virtual field trip to learn about Legos and play to learn. The Lego team showed what they do when they need help to think through a problem or get their creativity flowing. They make paper airplanes! Kaylee led the class by teaching them how to make one design of a plane then Miss Steward showed them another design. We also read about the first female Master Lego Builder at New York's Lego Land.

On Saturday March 11th, the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade boys basketball team ended their season with a game against their parents/family members. It was a battle of 'the youngs" vs "the olds"! There were many smiles and it was the perfect way to end the season. Parents, thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to enjoy the day! Thanks for a great season Coach Adam and Coach Michael!

You scream, I scream, we all scream for ICE CREAM! On Monday March 13th, the junior high/high school building celebrated their Greater Raiders with a build your own ice cream sundae! Thank you to all the Great Raiders for being so AMAZING!

It's Girl Scout week and our Girl Scouts led our students in the Pledge of Allegiance as they raised the flag.

Cedarhurst Nursing home in Godfrey put a request out for Valentine's Day cards for their residents. The grade school students jumped at the chance to help out! They were very creative and thoughtful when constructing their cards. So proud of our students. Today we received a thank you note along with a picture!

YOU'RE INVITED!
On March 28 at 6:30 in the Cafeteria, Brussels CUSD will host a Meet the Candidate Night. Candidates who will be considered for the open board seats in the upcoming April 4 election will be on hand to discuss their views and answer questions. See you all there!

A friend of mine asked me about purchasing a wooden flag from this website online. I said, "I know that our vocational teacher, Chad Brodbeck, has our students do that type of thing. How about give them a shot at it?" So I sent Mr. B a picture and he and his students took it from there! I am so proud of the work that they do here at BHS! Go Logan and Mr. B!

Big thanks again to CCHD's Sandy Teichmann (aka Germ-y Edith) and Jamie Bailey who came to the grade school classrooms to teach the students about proper handwashing. The kids had a blast with the our newest student and best friend, Edith, but agreed she has a lot to learn about staying germ-free!

Week of Feb 27th to March 3rd READING ACROSS AMERICA! See the attached flyer for daily activities!

A big shout out to CCHD's Jamie Bailey and Sandy Teichmann who came down to describe their nursing careers to our Health Careers students. They gave our students an honest view of how versatile, challenging and rewarding a career in nursing can be. The county is blessed to have such professionals caring for us!
